i remember when i was a little girl, my dad traveled a lot. he worked abroad in places like belize, bangladesh, china, panama, japan and korea. he would bring back treasures from each place that i would never ask for, but always quietly anticipate and hope for. but when he was in korea, he always knew what i wanted him to bring back. stationery.

even as a little girl i was fascinated with pretty papers. dad would sometimes bring back storybooks and i remember taking so much time with each page. i cherished my stationery kits and took my time with each word i wrote in those letters...careful to make sure my words were worthy of the fanciful and dear pages.

i spent this past september in seoul and on my free days went roaming the streets and taking hours in each little paper goods shop. it inspired me to try my hand at it.

A year ago, as I was preparing to move to Scotland to study Human Rights, my friend Mary told me about an organization called LiNK (Liberty in North Korea). LiNK runs rescue missions for North Korean defectors. They risk their lives to save these people, running from the horror in North Korea, and empower them to share their stories with a world who has known too little for too long.

I remember as a child, being fascinated with the Holocaust. My fourth grade mind couldn't comprehend how this could be history....how that kind of horror could have happened in the same world i live in. But it's happening still today. It's happening in North Korea...every.day. Something has to change.

It starts with people surviving to tell their story.

just sent off another project today! it's been a busy summer, but so thankful to be a small part of all of these lovely celebrations.

it's so nice to have a minute to spare to wrap projects up pretty. isn't it so lovely to get a pretty little package? i remember when i was young, if my mom was particularly busy around christmas time (which she usually was, as a florist/restaurant owner/etc.) she'd have me help her wrap all the presents for my cousins. it was my favorite to get to help her, and feel like i'd contributed to the gift in some way.

it made me so happy to wrap up these little packages today...

...and made me look forward with so much gladness, to the many years i get to wrap christmas and birthday gifts for these little rascals (my nephew caleb and niece chloe)...

but it also made me think about the way the Father likes to give us good gifts, and the way He packages them up for us in different experiences, peoples, and places. what a tremendous Father we have, and what love He shows us, even when we can't see.

bonjour from paris!

sincere apologies for the long delay in blog updates. i've been all over southern california, and mississippi and back to scotland. after several scenic and thoughtful train rides and a short weekend in london, i'm finding myself in the lovely area of paris called montmartre. the cute little apartment we're staying in is just 5 doors down from "au marche de la butte," the market of sweet lucien and grumpy monsieur collignon. amélie is my all-time favorite movie (watched best from under a home-made fort, projected onto a wall), so being here is an absolute dream.

all that to say that i'll be out of commission for the rest of july. feel free to e-mail me with questions about future projects and things, but this calligraphy calendar is all booked up for the rest of this month! thanks so much for all of the tremendously kind words that have been sent my way, and i sincerely wish you adventurous, warm, and lively summer nights (except for those of you in the southern hemisphere , hope you're warm and cozy).

i can't stop watching this video. the song is ridiculous. and the video! it's so fun! i've been getting pretty tired of seeing new kid's wear lines that dress 5 year olds like 20 year olds...not cool.

i love this stella kid's line...and kind of want to exchange all of my clothes for these clothes. the bright color combos and all the mixed patterns are so much cooler than "city black."

my 25th birthday is coming up...is it ridiculous that i kind of want it to be themed after this video? donuts? faux mustaches? balloons? wearing bright mixed patterns? cotton candy?! i mean...this is a winning combination, rigggghhhhht?! i know...it's not prescribed for a 25th birthday. but a girl can dream...

i've become a permanent fixture on the floor of our living room, trying to make magic happen with some new and very exciting projects i'm working on! i literally have been spending hours upon hours...upon hours, in the same spot, seated on the floor, perched over the coffee table with a tall glass of elderflower water. singing along very loudly to johnny flynn & efterklang. this is the nonsense my flatmates have to put up with when i'm entrenched in a project. but you'll notice something behind me...?

...the lovely pattern adorning one of our walls. one of my favorite things about my flat here in scotland, is that each room features a quirky wallpaper pattern. our living room wallpaper pattern reminds me of an old man's hawaiian shirt. i'm on a mission to find a matching shirt to recreate this magic...

keep an eye out for the matching hawaiian shirt for me, yeah? cool.

sweet chloé e-mailed me one happy day enquiring about logo-design work. i immediately fell in love with her sweetness and her really enchanting work. i'm so excited to have been a part of her new and improved website but most of all to have met this lovely soul.

funnest part about it is that she's one of my few new UK clients. here's a pic of her and her partner emma-jane. they're pretty much the cutest ever, right? i.know.

i heard about vivian maier through a friend of mine. this mysterious woman who lived her days being a mary poppins for children she nannied...but spent the rest of her time roaming through the streets of chicago silently capturing the spirit of humanity. who was she? i'm so captivated by her photographs and have become quite enchanted with this woman who the world will never quite know. looking through her photos of the people from this time makes me actually wonder if people lived more back then...the people in her photos are so real. it's silly to think about how revolutionary we think we are when i look at these photos. take one look at that mail drop and you'll know we're fools if we think so.

i don't really like celebrities. i mean...i don't not like them, i'm sure they're lovely and that's why people like them and stuff. but i'd rather not know what they are doing every minute of everyday. i mean...i don't even know them. i don't know their mom or pop's names or if they're dog or cat people, or what they laugh like, and more importantly, why they're letting US weekly be so mean to them. plus my mind's already overflowing with the excess of life updates i find on my facebook newsfeed. some of my friends think it necessary to update me and let me know that they are going to eat a cookie before they go to bed. (not going to lie, being so far away from you all, i kind of do like to know about that cookie before bed, makes me feel like i'm with you). but i think there's one exception to this. lisa. you'll notice i call her lisa. it feels unnatural to me to call her by both names because somehow i regard lisa as a friend. i think we would like the same things and i wonder what her friends are like, what her mom and pop's names are and think she's probably a cat person. most importantly, i like little lisa and her geetar. they make me happy. especially this tune...but since i can't embed it, here's another...

these cutes are cam & katie. i remember this one night...sitting on katie's couch with her and talking about cam. she was telling me about how she loved cam so much...but as a friend...and i giggled inside...knowing that if she were me and i were her, there'd be so much more clarity for her to see...that she love loved cam. i could see it so clearly that night, but little birdie needed to discover that love for herself. and she did! unfortunately i didn't get to be there to celebrate these two lovely hearts but i smiled multiple times that day...in rainy glasgow, thinking about my two friends saying yes to each other for eternity. so thankful for the kind of love you two share. and very glad i got to be a small part of your day. here is their escort card display...

things have been lovely in scotland. the weather's constantly trying to put a damper on things, but there's no crushing the loveliness of the people here. yet, when i'm wrapped/trapped up in my blanket, weary of wet socks and a chilly nose, i can't help but think of how wonderful the home i've come from is. the golden state has me hooked. so i'll be coming home for the holidays, to visit with friends and to get cozy with my sweet family. while i'm there, i'm hoping to put to good use, all the calligraphy practice i've been getting in my time here. i've got some pretty new scripts for you to use in your invitations, menus, place cards, vows, quotes, etc. whilst i'm home, i'm hoping to get a few projects to beef up my european travels fund. my student budget has not been so kind. so please holler this way if you're interested in arranging something! also, because my time will be limited, it would be helpful if you got in touch as soon as possible so that i can prepare to give your project the time it needs. until then, i'll be perched on the windowsill, waiting for the 2 seconds that the sun comes out to tease scotland, sipping on scottish tea and nibbling on teacakes...dreaming of warm cali days.

my heart could explode when i think of these two lovely beings. i'm so out of control blessed to be a part of their lives. kelli & sam are so living their life with radical and inspiring abandon to Papa and they love doing it. they were married back in november but krystel at couture events coordinated this lovely day to celebrate them all over again. the girls at joielala did a beautiful job of capturing them. sam is a camera shy boy. i totally get it. i run from any camera pointed my way. but he still looks adorable and completely in love with sweet, kind, precious kelli. who can blame him...

oh yeah, and i got to do some calligraphy for it. ha. i almost forgot because i got overwhelmed with talking about two of my absolute favorite people. this sweet shoot was featured on style me pretty yesterday!

i've always loved street art. you can really only find it in real urban cities. there are a million different things i love about it. they're usually more large-scale and shocking in their effect. they also become a part of the local landscape in a way that's unique to each piece and neighborhood. they're more accessible than other forms of art, and i really kind of love that they're generally more overt with the message they portray. through an amazing new intiative that the MCASD is heading up, there are 20 street artists from 8 countries bringing in some grit to america's "finest city." i am still in awe with the group of artists they're bringing in. BANKSY. cannot wait. but until then, check out these amazing pieces by shepard fairey and os gemeos. i'm not at horton plaza nearly enough to see that human step ladder as much as i want to. what a beauty.

a bit of news.

part of me is so thrilled for this adventure and part of me is still fighting reluctance to leave this life here as i know it.

the news. in january, i was admitted into the university of glasgow's MSc program in human rights and international studies. i'm so humbled and grateful for the opportunity. however, i've had to muster up more courage than i've known to will the "goodbye" to san diego. san diego has been such a dream to my understanding of people and the function of art. good news is that from everything i've heard about glasgow, it will be a similar experience. when i was speaking to the director of the university's international office, he said, "the greatest thing about glasgow's art scene is that it's not reserved for certain people as it may be in certain cities (london). in glasgow, art is for everyone, because art is for people. you can jump in a cab and find that the taxi driver has his two cents on art." you should have seen my face as he said this. there are two words to describe what i felt. captivated. sold.

so for the next year, you can find me across the pond in glasgow, roaming the halls that you see below! please let me know if you have any recommendations on life in the uk! especially tips on how to survive as a vegetarian in uk culture!

molly and donovan are very dear friends of mine. before i met dono, i heard stories upon stories from different people about how epic he was...how everything he did was just plain crazy. i heard that he jumped off balconies into pools, partied harder than anyone, and was usually responsible for the chaos. so when i finally met him, i had expected a riot. instead he was peaceful and friendly, and i....was confused. i went back to the friends who had told me all those stories and told them i must have met a different donovan. their response..."you did. you met the molly-donovan." i slowly got to know donovan, and found him to be one of the most kind-hearted and loyal people i've ever known, and looking towards this marriage, my heart grows full thinking of the life he's building and the man he's becoming for a girl he loves.

since then, i've had the honor of getting to know molly. people are always surprised when i tell them that molly and i are such good friends. i get it. on the surface, we're pretty different. but in some ways, molly and i understand each other much better for that very reason. molly has turned out to be someone who is sometimes the only one i can talk to about some things. in the aftermath of enveloping heartbreak, molly sat with me on the porch of our favorite restaurant and let me cry, shared her words with me when i ran out, and told me tomorrow could be different. i adore molly. and i'm so grateful for her friendship. i'm wowed at the girl she's been for that boy, and the wife she'll become for that husband.

these invitations mean more to me than pretty writing and paper. they mean the funnest weekend that Palm Springs has ever seen because of m & d's beautiful journey that will be celebrated with complete abandon by so many of us.

lovely molly had a strong vision for what she wanted. she had a good idea for what these pieces were supposed to look like, and i think we got it to look pretty close to what she pictured. and p.s. if you're ever in need of a make-up artist, molly's your gal!

i have to admit that this one with the pictures is one of my favorite pieces. the text reads: "there once was a young boy who grew up in the dirt. hundreds of mile away from a girl who knew only the sea. they would each live, learn and grow. they would find their own ways, but to each other that would one day lead. their paths would grow more and more together until one day the boy would drop to his knee to ask...dear girl. will you marry me?"

slowly. but i'm learning.

this is in regards to calligraphy and life.

through a series of heart-shaping events, this past year has shown me that so much mystery still exists. and i'm learning about people, about beauty, about our hearts and about myself....this funny person i've become. through a dear old friend, i found something i'd neglected for so long in my life. i found solitude. and beautiful as i found it, it was a struggle for me.

my natural tendency is to surround myself with as many people as possible, because by some radical blessing, i've found the most insanely awesome people around me. so i find that i always want to be with them. solitude, though i admire it...is a supreme challenge for me.

in comes calligraphy. i've found myself up until 3 or 4 AM on countless nights...tucked away by myself in our house's study, focused so wholly on my pen nib's path. in calligraphy i've found a deep need and appreciation for not only solitude, but being completely in the moment. i can't think too far ahead or too far back when i write. i have to track my pen's point exactly where it is in that moment to decide where it's come and where it's going. i also am usually full in my heart for the people who i write for...for friends who are to be married, for friends projects and businesses, for friends who are experiencing deep hardship and could use an encouraging reminder of how Wonderful they are, and for strangers who are now a part of my journey, and i a part of theirs.

i love calligraphy because i think by His insane goodness, it is being used to change me...

melody brandon is awe.some. the girl obviously has tons of vision and talent. she set up sweet & saucy last year and it has been so successful! the thing i admire about melody is that you can tell even though her business has exploded, she doesn't compromise the quality and creativity of her projects. working in the wedding industry specifically, can be challenging in many ways, but melody seems to do it in a way that's really uniquely her and largely successful because of it.

she let me make some signs for her shop and here are some of those little pieces! thanks, melody.

my dear friend kelli. she's a total dreamer. her art is so wonderful and powerful because it takes you into those dreams. considering how much weddings are a dream that begin in childhood for so many girls, it's lovely that her art can now be incorporated into weddings in such a tangible and share-able way. kelli is availabe to create save the dates and wedding invitations. here is the save the date for our friends molly and donovan.

placecards are so fun because people feeeel that you've made a place for them in your celebration. my dear friend sharon had suuuuuch a special wedding where so much of it was diy. we wrote her guest's names on little wooden tags and tied the tags around mason jars that guests drank lemonade and juice from! here are a couple pictures of the sweet celebration and the cute tags. you can check out the full coverage at style me pretty!
